What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is responsible for billions of dollars worth of Internet sales each and every year. Almost any type of product or service you find online has its own affiliate program. That means that there is a huge opportunity to make money online with affiliate marketing. Anything from TVs, pet supplies, software, or e-books could bring commission to an affiliate marketer.

The businesses that have products to sell online can keep their advertising costs down by outsourcing their advertising efforts to affiliates. The majority of these businesses do this through affiliate networks. Instead of having their own affiliate program specifically for their products, they partner with companies like Commission Junction, Shareasale, Hydra, Pepperjam Network, Clickbank, and the list goes on.

Sales generated by affiliate marketers are tracked via their affiliate link. It contains their affiliate ID, which shows the company who to pay when a sale is made. Most affiliate networks (80%) pay their affiliates commission by CPS (Cost Per Sale). Many of these networks also operate by CPA (Cost Per Action). This provides an opportunity for affiliate marketers to get paid a flat rate when consumers buy a product, order a free trial of a product, or even when they submit contact information, such as name, email, address, and phone.

So how do you get started in affiliate marketing?

Most affiliates start out their career by purchasing an affiliate guide of some sort. They come in all shapes and sizes, from e-books, to Web-based membership sites, videos, forums, and so on. The majority of these affiliate guides come from a place called Clickbank.

As I said before, Clickbank is one of the most popular affiliate networks online. It has a digital product library of well over 10,000, including eBooks, software, and other non-physical products. Clickbank is where most affiliates get started, because the affiliate guides that are sold on Clickbank usually teach people how to make money with Clickbank. Apart from that fact, Clickbank products can be anything from weight loss eBooks, to football betting software.

Information sells. Clickbank has paid over $1.2 billion to its affiliates, and that's proof that lots of money can be made as a Clickbank affiliate marketer. In fact, I've been making money online full-time since October of 2008. I started out slow, but now I'm very comfortable with the commission checks I receive every two weeks.

The cool thing about making money online as an affiliate marketer is that once you've set up a successful stream of income, all you have to do is occasionally revise it to maximize your profits.

It was confusing for me when I began finding merchants to affiliate myself with, and it can still be confusing as the internet is in a world-wide market with lots of competition without marketing themselves? It all came about as the internet grew in popularity - which makes me think it won't disappear any time soon.

I received a great way to make money on the net. But then, they really couldn't, come to think of it. The goal remains simple - get the word out about their product, and a great way for the specific product that will fill their need.

Someone should have thought of it sooner!

BUILDING YOUR TEAM OF AFFILIATES

When you join the SFI affiliate program, you have two ways to advance your business:

How to protect yourself from phishing scams ?

Here are a few simple precautions that you can take to avoid being a victim to a phishing scam:
1) Never update any personal or financial records by clicking on e-mail links. If you get an e-mail asking you to do so, ignore it. Phishers often use links within e-mails to direct their victims to a spoofed site, usually to a similar address such as "secure-mybank.com" instead of "mybank.com."2) If you really feel the need to verify the claims, warnings or statements made in the e-mails, open up your browser, type in the Website's main URL manually, and log into your account.
3) Look for secure Websites that start with "https" instead of "http." All secure Websites start with "https" ("s" for security) and if it does not, there are no guarantees on the safety of your information.
4) Look for a lock icon on the browser's status bar. This small and often unnoticed icon lets you check the level of encryption, expressed in bits, by hovering over the icon with your cursor. Note that the fact that the Website is using encryption doesn't necessarily mean that the Website is legitimate. It only tells you that data is being sent in encrypted form.
5) Report the message to the company that the message claims to be from. By doing that you will be alerting the company of the abuse of their brand, so that they can report it to the proper authorities and help keep other people from being ripped off.
6) Educate yourself. Banks or e-commerce companies generally personalize e-mails, while phishers do not. Learn to recognize a legitimate e-mail from a spoofed one. This may be hard to do sometimes, with the scammers continuously "upgrading" themselves, but it's absolutely necessary that you at least keep up with them. Let common sense guide you. If anything seems too good to be true, then it probably is.
7) Always check your critical accounts for any irregular incidents or payments. Check all your statements, and if you see any unauthorized transactions, get to the bottom of it immediately.
8) Never reply to spam e-mails, as this will give the sender confirmation they have reached a live address. The last thing you want to do is to provide encouragement to the scammer that his plans are working!
9) Always keep your computer secure by installing anti-virus software and keeping it up to date. By doing so, you will ensure protection against malicious software and be alerted of any intrusions by worms, Trojans, or similar dangers.
10) If you're on broadband, get a firewall. You'll need a firewall since your internet connection is on 24/7 and you're not always there to spot intrusions and illegal use of your bandwidth.
11) Update the security patches for your Internet Explorer browser, or better still, download Mozilla's browser called Firefox (http://www.firefox.com) which is reputed to be more secure than its Microsoft counterpart.
12) Arm yourself with browser enabled plug-ins and tools such as NetCraft (http://toolbar.netcraft.com/) and a lot more by doing a simple Google search for "anti-phishing software."

I make money online by selling other people's products via affiliate marketing. I find a niche, find products that I can promote and then set up a website to market them. Finding products to sell is one of the trickiest parts of any project - and my choice of product has led to some huge successes - and some monumental failures!

Choosing the right price for your digital products is one of the most critical, yet difficult, aspects of your business strategy.

Most merchants understand that over-valuing a product kills sales. It is also fairly well understood that under-pricing cuts the unit revenue without any guarantee of a significant gain in sales volume. But few people are aware of a third (but equally important) pricing observation; that compromise pricing can be as harmful as either of the other two blunders.

To understand why this is the case, we need to examine the principles that lie behind effective pricing strategy. In general, merchants adopt one of two key philosophies when they price a product. They either set the price at a low level (which produces a low margin but high sales volume), or they choose a high price level (which trades off volume in order to gain margin).

These two approaches are known respectively as "penetration pricing" and "pricing for profit." The former strategy is typically used by new competitors in a market, or by existing retailers that need to quickly establish a position of dominance after a product launch. The latter technique is favored by established businesses with mature products, where the objective is to earn the maximum profit yield from an existing dominant market position.

It is clear that, whether the strategy is to price low or high, going too far in either direction can be self-defeating. But mid-way pricing is equally ineffective, as it compromises both strategies; it unnecessarily discounts the product without doing so sufficiently to generate a significant improvement in volume.

As a publisher of digital merchandise, you are at a distinct advantage over traditional merchants, since there are no marginal costs associated with your business. Regardless of how low you choose to price your product, you are still guaranteed to show a gross profit on every sale. In contrast, a merchant of physical goods has real fulfillment costs (product manufacturing, damaged and unsold inventory, storage, shipping and handling) that impose a fixed lower price limit below which each sale represents a loss. This advantage affords you great flexibility in your pricing, but even if you use this flexibility to pursue a penetration pricing strategy, you should still be aware of the risk of counter-productive price-cutting.

Some ClickBank merchants use an experimental approach to pricing. Their aim is to establish the most profitable price through trial an error. Although this is understandable, even logical, it can be a customer-relations nightmare. You should think carefully before over-pricing a product and subsequently being forced to reduce the price in order to stimulate demand. Nobody likes to return to a website and see that a product they already purchased is now being offered at a lower price.

The opposite approach is to steadily increase prices from a low level, and is usually less of a cause for concern. Some merchants launch their products with a deliberately low introductory price - a benefit that they emphasize in their sales pitch. The time-limited, or volume-limited, nature of this technique can be a powerful incentive to buy, and it also allows the merchant a trial period in which to observe sales behavior before setting a definitive price to meet his longer-term strategic objectives.
